THE PROBLEM:
Our government is supposed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people. Yet, the ballot box has always been restricted in America to ensure the already powerful stay in power. For all the celebration of our Founding Fathers, an abysmal 3% of the population voted in the first ever U.S. Presidential election.
Since then, non-landowners (1856), women (1920), people of color (1965), language minorities (1975), people with disabilities (1982), and even military and overseas voters (2009) have had to fight for the right to vote.
And it continues. The 2018 election cycle saw a stolen election in Georgia, voter suppression of Native Americans in North Dakota, severe voter access issues in Kansas, and even outright cheating in North Carolina. And much, much more.
We need reform now to ensure that are elections are free and fair and to, at long last, fulfill the promise of American democracy.
THE SOLUTION:
House Resolution 1, the “For the People Act,” is a sweeping package of reforms that will clean up corruption in Washington, fight big money in politics and make it easier, not harder, to vote. This bill is the legislation America needs to ensure fair elections and representation.
